NAIDOC Week 2018

From Sunday 8 July to Sunday 15 July, Australia will be celebrating NAIDOC week. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. The goal of NAIDOC week is to recognise and celebrate the history and lifestyle of all Australians in an inclusive and informative way. The theme for this year is "Because of Her, we can!", which aims to celebrate the essential role that indigenous women have played – and continue to play – as active and significant role models at the community, local, state and national levels.

"As leaders, trailblazers, politicians, activists and social change advocates, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women fought and continue to fight, for justice, equal rights, rights to country, for law and justice, access to education, employment and to maintain and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, language, music and art." Festivals and celebrations like NAIDOC Week are absolutely essential in addressing issues facing the original custodians of the land, whilst providing opportunities for indigenous culture to thrive where it has been stifled in the past. This years theme recognises indigenous women as strong and determined role models who have empowered past generations and continue to pave the way for generations to come. We acknowledge their struggles and honour their fortitude.
